Pre-Operative Exams

Identifying potential health risks for a safer surgery.

Preparing for surgery involves more than just scheduling the procedure. It requires careful evaluation of your health to ensure a safe and successful operation.

At NJ Primary Care, we perform pre-operative examinations to assess your overall health and identify any potential risks or issues that may affect your surgery or anesthesia.

The goal of a pre-operative examination is to ensure you are in the best possible condition for surgery and to minimize any potential complications during and after the procedure.

This includes instructions on pre-operative preparations, which may include fasting and discontinuing certain medications.

Types of Pre-Operative Examinations:

Below are the types of pre-operative examinations / tests we perform at our medical centers in New Jersey:

  • Physical Examination – During this physical exam, we will assess your vital signs, heart and lung function, and general health while identifying any underlying health issues.

  • Laboratory Tests – As part of a pre-operative screening we perfom a complete blood count (CBC), blood chemistry, and coagulation studies. Additional tests may be ordered to help detect conditions like clotting disorders, anemia or infections.

  • Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) – An EKG records the electrical activity of the heart which is essential to assess heart function before surgery.

  • Imaging Studies – The use of X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs may be ordered to help us to visualize internal organs and structures which aid in identifying any abnormalities.

  • Medical History & Meds  – Be ready to provide a detailed medical history, including any chronic illnesses, allergies, and past surgeries. Bring a list of your current medications, dosages, and any supplements you take.
  • Lifestyle Adjustments – Your healthcare provider may recommend lifestyle changes leading up to surgery, such as quitting smoking, adjusting meds, or modifying your diet.

Pre-operative Exanination
Questions & Answers
What should I bring to my pre-operative examination?
Bring your identification, insurance information, a list of current medications, and any questions or concerns you have for your healthcare team.
Is the pre-operative examination the same as a consultation with my surgeon?
No, the pre-operative examination focuses on your overall health assessment and readiness for surgery. A consultation with your surgeon is a separate discussion about the specifics of your procedure, risks, and expected outcomes.
How long does a pre-operative examination typically take?
The duration can vary, but barring any significant pathology the appointment can take 30 minutes to an hour. It will take a few days to complete all documentation as we need to provide necessary assessments and test results to your surgical facility.
Can I bring a family member or friend with me to the pre-operative examination?

Having a support person with you is often encouraged, as they can help with information and emotional support during the process.

What if a medical issue is discovered during the pre-operative examination?

If a significant issue arises, your healthcare team will discuss the best course of action with you, which may include postponing or adjusting your surgery.
